The mission of the Division of State Fire Marshal, as the authority having jurisdiction, shall be to enforce and perform the duties required by the Comprehensive Fire Safety Act, and all other provisions of the general and public laws insofar as such powers and duties relate to fires, fire prevention, fire protection, fire inspection, and fire investigation and fire training.
The Division shall plan for and oversee the comprehensive, professional, and consistent enforcement of the fire safety code with the intent of making Rhode Island the safest State in the nation in terms of fire safety.

Marshal John Chartier was appointed as the Rhode Island State Fire Marshal in 2008. He is responsible for all fire code inspections, fire investigations, and bomb squad activity in the State of Rhode Island.
Prior to assuming this positon, Marshal Chartier served with the City of Warwick’s Fire Department for 30 years, the last 6 of which he served as the Chief of Department and as the Emergency Management Director for the city. In his capacity as Fire Chief he served as a member of the Unified Incident Command Team for the Station Nightclub Fire, which occurred in neighboring West Warwick. He has served on the Board of Directors for Rhode Island’s Urban Search and Rescue Team and the Rhode Island Association of Fire Chiefs.
Marshal Chartier holds an Associate’s Degree in Fire Science as well as the title of Executive Fire Officer issued by the 93rd United States Congress. Marshal Chartier is a recipient of the City of Warwick Medal of Valor and the Rhode Island Veteran of Foreign Wars Medal of Valor.
